Hamam etiquette in Side is simpler than most first-timers fear: wear swimwear under the peştemal, move calmly on wet marble, keep voices low, and tell the attendant what you need. At Sırma Wellness Hamam the team guides newcomers through each step — this article covers the social and practical rules so you arrive relaxed.
What to wear
Swimwear + peştemal
Keep a swimsuit or swim shorts on. You will be given a peştemal to wrap over the top. You are not expected to be fully naked in a resort-style hammam visit.
Hair and jewellery
Tie long hair back. Leave watches, heavy necklaces and rings at the hotel — bare skin works better for the scrub, and valuables are safer locked away.
After the ritual
Pack dry underwear and a light change of clothes. You will leave damp; a spare T-shirt in your bag helps for the walk or taxi back to Kumköy, Evrenseki or your Side hotel.
What to bring (and what to ask about)
A short packing list most guests use:
- Swimwear (worn under clothes to save changing time)
- Hair tie / clip
- Dry underwear and a light top
- Small cash for tips or drinks if you choose
- Phone for WhatsApp confirmation — then store it securely
Ask the house what is provided: towels, slippers, lockers, disposable items. Peştemal, towel and slippers are provided; you may also bring your own. Please bring your own swimsuit — swimsuits are not rented. Do not rely on a generic internet list alone — confirm when you book Hammam Program 1 or any programme.
Manners in the hot room
- Shower guidance: Follow staff instructions on arrival; cleansing is part of the flow.
- Sit, don’t hover: Heat is stronger higher up; sitting is cooler and safer on marble.
- Quiet voices: Sound carries under domes and off stone.
- No guest photography: Privacy first.
- Basins (kurna): In traditional settings you scoop and pour — you do not climb into the basin. Follow the house pattern at Sırma.
Talking to the attendant
Useful phrases in any language:
- “Softer, please” / lighter pressure
- “Skip this area” (tattoo, sunburn, cut)
- “First time”
- Same-gender attendant preference, if that matters — ask at booking, not mid-scrub. Female and male therapists are available; state a preference when booking (subject to availability). Female-only or private sessions can be arranged on request.
The scrub can look dramatic when dead skin rolls away; that is expected. Foam follows. Then rinse and rest.
Etiquette around packages and time
Arrive on time for your slot. Programmes such as Hammam Program 2 or Peeling & Foam Massage have timed steps; heat and rest add buffer. If you feel dizzy in the heat, leave the hot room and tell staff immediately — finishing the sequence is never worth pushing through discomfort.
Alcohol and a heavy meal right before a hammam are poor ideas. Water before and after is wise. This is comfort guidance, not medical counsel.
From etiquette to booking
Once you know what to wear and bring, the next click is the menu: start with Peeling & Foam Massage or a full arc like Hammam Program 1. Message on WhatsApp or open Contact — say you are a first-timer staying in Side, Manavgat, Çolaklı or Sorgun, and Sırma Wellness Hamam will set expectations for your visit. ## Mixed tourist hammams vs traditional segregated baths
Side’s holiday hammams are typically adapted for international visitors: swimwear, clearer time slots, and mixed areas are common. Historic city baths elsewhere in Turkey may separate genders by section or hour. Know which format you booked. At Sırma, ask any preference questions when you reserve Hammam Program 1 or Peeling & Foam Massage so arrival is calm.
Voice, phones and shared space
Keep calls outside the hot rooms. Put phones away during scrub and foam — foam and screens are a bad mix, and other guests deserve privacy. If you need translation help, ask staff rather than filming the attendant.
Aftercare etiquette
Dress fully before walking into public streets. Tip discreetly if you tip. If something was unclear during the ritual, give feedback politely at reception or on WhatsApp afterward — houses prefer specific notes (“scrub too firm on sunburned shoulders”) over vague ratings.
Linking etiquette to the right booking
Etiquette anxiety fades once the sequence is familiar. Use this page as your pre-visit checklist, then open Hammam Program 2 if you already know you want a longer massage after the scrub. First-timers who only want the cultural core can stay with peeling and a short oil step.
Checklist the night before
Charge your phone for the WhatsApp confirmation, set an alarm that includes taxi buffer, place swimwear on top of your bag, and remove heavy rings now so you do not forget in the morning. If you share a room with friends, tell them your return window so nobody worries.
Guests staying in Tilköy or Sorgun should add a few extra minutes for traffic near Side centre in peak season. When in doubt, arrive early and wait calmly rather than sprinting across wet marble.
